| | Making of 'Steampunk Village' by Robh Ruppel (http://www.3dtotal.com/tutorial/photoshop/steampunk_village_fantasy_digital_painting/steampunk_village_01.php) Digital Painting - I generally start by making a series of simple compositional sketches. I'm looking for a pattern that's both dynamic and interesting. I do several on a page so I can compare them and not fall in love with one idea too quickly or keep repeating the same idea.
| | Digital Illustration Workflow (http://aliasdesign.autodesk.com/learning/tutorials/details/Illustration%20Workflow%20with%20Nick%20Harris_133069/) It's March 2008 and I'm participating in a friendly challenge in a forum at Pixelbrush.com. I have two about weeks to come up with an image for the theme 'Steampunk'. Putting this Adobe Photoshop tutorial together means I have slightly less than that, but I'm not going to quibble, as it isn't about racing, it's about drawing. Usually I'd do a number of sketch thumbnail ideas to find the beginnings of an image, which is something Sketchbook is perfect for. I just don't have the time because of other work pressures, so I'm going to wing it (not recommended). I do all figure work straight out of my head without reference, just because that's how I've grown up doing it. The great thing for me about a theme like this is that it allows me to make up the rest as well. It isn't right or wrong to do it this way. It's just a way of working that suits me. If I don't know what something looks like, I get reference. It just makes sense.

| | Make A Steampunk Gear Using Photoshop Patterns and Effects (http://pizzabytheslice.com/make-a-steampunk-gear-using-photoshop-patterns-and-effects.htm) The steampunk tileable wallpaper I made a year or two ago generated quite a few "how’d you do that" emails so here’s a scaled-down project you can knock out quite easily.

The main focus, aside from the style of course, is fusing elements from different sources together to create a cohesive whole.
